Datuk Seri Michael Chong Ten Soo

Datuk Seri Michael Chong Ten Soo was conferred the title of Panglima Jasa Negara (P.J.N.) by the twelfth Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2004 which carries the title of ‘Datuk’. Later, he was bestowed the title of Seri Mahkota Wilayah (S.M.W.) by the fourteenth Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2012 which carries the title of ‘Datuk Seri’.
He has also been bestowed with the following Selangor state honours:
- Dato’ Setia Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah (D.S.I.S.) awarded by DYMM Sultan Selangor in 2004 which carries the title of ‘Dato’; and
- Setia Mahkota Selangor (S.M.S.) and Jaksa Pendamai (J.P.) awarded by DYMM Sultan Selangor in 2002 and 1997 respectively.
As Head of the Malaysian Chinese Association’s (MCA) Public Services and Complaints Department since 1987, Datuk Seri Michael Chong is an icon of compassion who aids people in need from all walks of life.
He has successfully solved more than 35,000 cases involving pimps, loan sharks, girls forced into prostitution, missing persons, blackmail and extortion rackets, scams and cybercrimes throughout his 36 years of dedicated public service.
Educated at Sekolah Menengah Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Batu Arang, Selangor, he underwent hardship during the early years. “Many kind people helped my family in times of trouble. It boils down to empathy and putting yourself in other people’s shoes and lending a helping hand,” he explained, embodying the motto of ‘Service above self’.
Datuk Seri Michael Chong joined the MCA in 1980 as executive secretary to former MCA deputy president Tan Sri Lee Kim Sai. In 2017, he was recognised as the longest-serving head of a public services and complaints bureau in the country by the Malaysia Book of Records. He was named as Tokoh Pengguna in 2002 by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.
He is advisor to the Young Malaysians Movement and Kuala Lumpur branch of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation as well as a former honorary deputy commissioner of the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA). Other voluntary positions held previously are Vice President of the National Justice of Peace Council (2012 – 2017) and advisor to the Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation (2016 – 2022).
