Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood

Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood was conferred the title of Panglima Jasa Negara (P.J.N.) by the eleventh Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2000 which carries the title of ‘Datuk’. He has also been bestowed with the following state honours:
- Darjah Seri Melaka (D.S.M.) and Jaksa Pendamai (J.P.) awarded by TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka;
- Ahli Ahmad Shah Pahang (A.A.P.) and Ahli Mahkota Pahang (A.M.P.) awarded by DYMM Sultan Pahang; and
- Pingat Pekerti Terpilih (P.P.T.) awarded by DYMM Sultan Perak.
Datuk Abdul Razak holds a wealth of over 30 years’ experience in the Malaysian automotive sector, having helmed senior management positions in the marketing and branding of Proton cars and motorsports at UMW, EON and Proton Holdings Berhad (PROTON) since the early ‘80s. He was inducted into the Malaysian Motorsports Hall of Fame by MAM in 2017 and awarded the ‘Best Team Manager for Motorsports’ by AAM in 2002 as recognition of his endeavours in Malaysian motorsports.
As Head of Marketing at EON, he was in the driving seat of:
- Almost all product launches, from the Proton Saga, Saga Megavalve, Saga Aeroback, Proton Knight, Proton Wira, Wira Aeroback and Proton Waja to the Proton Perdana; and
- The stretched project of Proton cars involving the Saga Executive, Wira Executive, Waja Executive and Perdana Executive and Limousine through the formation of Automotive Conversion Engineering (ACE).
Additionally, he was part of a team at EON which successfully pitched and secured the AUDI franchise under EUROMOBIL. He also served as sponsor representative in executive committees of the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU), Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), as well as advisor to the motorsports fraternity in Malaysia.
During his tenure at PROTON as Head of Group Aftersales and Motorsports, he:
- Introduced the Satria Neo R3 edition and the special, limited-edition Lotus Satria Neo. Developed together with the Lotus F1 team, the latter was a premium-priced car which was completely sold out;
- Commercialised the R3 line into a successful brand, comprising limited-edition R3 Protons, R3 accessories, merchandise and performance parts; and
- Oversaw 30 units of the Proton Satria Neo gaining access into the Japanese market, i.e. the first Proton model to be granted Type-Approval to be exported to Japan.
Under Datuk Abdul Razak’s stewardship, PROTON was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in 2011 as ‘The First Car Manufacturer to Win Eight Major Titles in a Championship’ whereby PROTON’s Satria Neo S2000 won the overall 2011 FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) driver’s title, APRC manufacturer’s title, APRC Teams Trophy, FIA Asia Cup Driver’s title, FIA Pacific Cup Driver’s title, Manufacturer’s title in the APRC Rally Cup for 2-wheel drive category, APRC Rally Cup 2-wheel drive Driver’s title and APRC Junior Cup Driver’s title.
The PROTON team won prestigious motorsports events during his term of service:
- Winning the FIA APRC three times and the Malaysian Rally Championship eight times;
- 2012 FIA Super World Rally Championship (S-WRC) in Sweden;
- 2011 FIA APRC covering Rally of China, Rally of New Zealand, Rally of Hokkaido, Rally of New Caledonia, Rally of Indonesia, Rally of Thailand dan Rally of Malaysia; and
- 2002 FIA Production World Rally Championship.
In his current venture, Datuk Abdul Razak is Chairman-cum-mentor of his family-owned business – the Astra group of companies – comprising Agensi Pekerjaan Astra Antartik Sdn Bhd which supplies local and foreign manpower outsourcing services; Astra Orchard Villa Resort, a homestay in Hulu Langat, Selangor; and Astra Antartik Sdn Bhd, a trading company.
He is Vice President of Majlis Datuk Persekutuan Malaysia (MDPM) and the internal auditor of Majlis Datuk Dato’ Malaysia (MDDM). He is also Chairman of Surau Eria Kota Kemuning in Selangor.
His educational qualifications include a Master of Business Administration from Universiti Teknologi MARA and a Bachelor of Economics from University Malaya. A penchant for lifelong learning has seen Datuk Abdul Razak attending the Marketing Strategic Course (MSC) and Basic Management Program (BMP) from the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Philippines besides completing the Directorship Programme for public-listed companies under BUSATRA while working at EON.
